Best practices in the assessment of learning involve performance expectations in which students will be able to apply knowledge, whether in making predictions, solving problems, or designing new solutions. I am impressed by their inclusion of social and policy details that are missing in many environmental science and sustainability texts. The one exception to this clarity of communication is Section 9.5 on Risk Assessment. Its depth and coverage of topics in sustainability would be appropriate for a non-majors, general science course in the environmental sciences. There are many impressive qualities of this text in terms of its comprehensiveness (discussed below). It may work very well for course that is designed more around the social dimensions of sustainability, as it does provide a much more comprehensive foundation of those topics. Since chapters and sections are really quite short, it would be essential for an instructor to fully flesh-out the ideas covered in a chapter with the use of examples, application questions, and integrated assessments. I don't see any problem with the structure of the book. But this variability is in fact ideal for a sustainability perspective, for students will find that addressing sustainability problems requires remaining open to different framings of research and policy solutions. The book is very clear, especially given the number of authors. The modular nature of this book lends itself to opportunities for supplementing and/or updating with more current case studies and examles. It would be great to see quantitative data and/or models throughout the book rather than in just a few chapters. Alternatively, I could assign a series of essay questions, asking students to use the open textbook as their main resource. It seems similar to that used / reviewed for in my current Environmental Science course, although the Sustainability text goes into greater depth and technical detail than my current texts. The book is relevant to all cultures and inclusive of the concerns of all. Very relevant, but as other reviewers have pointed out, the technology around sustainability is moving swiftly. The sequence of chapters follows a logical, orderly progression of concepts, generally using science concepts for a broad foundation for understanding economic, social, and political issues.
